All About Lawrenceville, NJ

Lawrenceville was originally founded as Maidenhead in 1697 in the colony of West Jersey, named after the historic English town on the Thames River. The term originally meant “new wharf” until it acquired another meaning that made some inhabitants uncomfortable. Reverend Isaac Brown of the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville, founder of the Academy of Maidenhead (now Lawrenceville School) led a movement to change the town’s name.

They finally succeeded in 1816 and the village was renamed to its current name. George Washington’s troops marched through the village after multiple battles in the Revolutionary War, and British General Cornwallis stayed here overnight in John Moore’s Tavern, now a residential house on Main Street. He wasn’t a big fan of the town.
