All About Deptford Township, NJ

The Dutch explorer Cornelius Jacobsen May led some of the first European settlers to the Deptford area, which soon came under British colonial rule. The township was first formed in 1695 and covered an area that included many other neighboring modern towns. Deptford Township got its name from the English port of Deptford along the River Thames.

The Clement Oak in Deptford is an oak tree estimated to be over 500 years old, and it was the site of the first hot air balloon landing on the continent in 1793. Jean-Pierre Blanchard completed a flight to Deptford from Philadelphia, carrying a personal letter from George Washington to deliver to the owner of whatever property Blanchard happened to arrive at. That made it the first piece of airmail delivered in the U.S.!

A great place to learn about the area is the Museum of American History. It’s not a huge museum but it contains historical artifacts and fossils ranging from pre-Columbian times to the early 1900s. There’s also a nice playground in the back of the museum if the kids want to play.

If you want to get an exciting and very intense workout, head over to Launch, a giant indoor trampoline park. It’s a great place to take the kids and even a good way to do something different for a date! Try out the arcade or a round of laser tag when you’re done with the trampolines, or just see how high you can bounce.
