Do You Have an Orthodontist Emergency?

Technically,’ dental emergency’ may not be the right word. However, wearing orthodontics hurts sometimes. If something is bothering you, we are here to help. At My Orthodontics in Deptford Township, we want to be sure you feel comfortable as possible throughout your orthodontic treatment.

Perhaps you’re out of town or on vacation or don’t want to make a big deal about your discomfort or orthodontic issues. Regardless, there may be something you can try on your own to fix the pain quickly. Read below for a quick guide to common problems and how you can help them.

Mouth Sores

Mouth sores are inevitable to most who wear traditional orthodontic appliances. You can treat sores inside your mouth by using a small amount of dental wax over the area that bothers you. Topical anesthetic, such as Ora-Gel, can relieve pain and give you time to heal.

Pain or Discomfort

Braces put a constant pressure on the teeth and jaw around the tightening phases. More force on your teeth causes movement and a bit of pain. After a couple of days, the soreness typically goes away.

An over-the-counter pain reliever can help. Follow the recommended dosages and do not exceed the maximum amount stated.

Feeling uncomfortable in braces is typical but should not last more than a few days. If you are uncomfortable for more than a few days, there is likely an underlying issue. Give us a call for an appointment.

Lost Elastics

Losing an elastic or the small wire in place of it happens occasionally. The o-ring is what is attached to the wire that holds your metal braces together, so don’t put off calling your orthodontist if it is lost. If it simply fell out, you may be able to reattach it yourself carefully with a pair of tweezers. If not, schedule an appointment at My Orthodontics in Deptford Township

Dislocated Wires

With an out-of-slot or poking wire, use dental wax over the wire until you can come and see us in person. Use a pencil eraser or cotton bud to try and push the wire close against your teeth until you can have it adjusted.

Loose or Broken Brackets

Try using the orthodontic wax to hold a loose or broken bracket or band in place until you can have it fixed. Please do your best to keep track of the loose bracket and take it to your next orthodontist appointment.
